A return to BLOOD, GORE, and sadistic VIOLENCE for horror director, James Wan.
I will either receive some under the breath “amens” for not being a suck up to James Wan’s greatness or some “You have got to be kidding me” eye rolls for hating on his new
HIGHLY ANTICIPATED film.
I’ll say this here and now, it’s 4/10 for me. I’m going to start with what I LOVED about this film. A true James Wan fan like myself should be going crazy over these revisits to the lighting and vibes of his past films!
The use of green lighting, dirty walls, that giant dusty attic being overseen by a giant fan in place of the window, displays of the killer’s murder props in the attic, gritty locations like the Seattle Underground, and the gore itself was a revisit to “Saw”.
The very clean with no more than three color schemes, blueish-gray lighting, and Wan’s
SUPER IMPRESSIVE camera techniques were revisits to “Insidious”.
The empty living room scenes with the paranormal stuff that kept happening, were giving me “The Conjuring” type vibes! The kill scenes were extremely painfully entertaining and bloody, the contorting movements of the killer were very original and cool to watch, even the concept of what was actually happening was SUPER COOL!
But… for me…
THE WRITING WAS TERRIBLE! The dialogue was super cringe, especially towards the end! The acting from many people in this movie was shit, especially towards the end. The empowering moment for our lead character was super cheesy and very Nancy from “A Nightmare On Elm Street”.
But it’s 2021, you don’t go through something that messed up and immediately break out into a cheesy “connection speech”.
I know James Wan didn’t write the screenplay but provided parts of the story. That being said, I’ll just CHOOSE TO BELIEVE that anything good about this corny-ass movie was because of one of his awesome ideas! Because the directing of the film was PERFECTLY EXECUTED. Overall, it felt like they gave an amazing horror director a very shitty screenplay with lots of bad actors to kill off and said, “Help us make this work! Bring back elements from all your classics and utilize them for this movie!”
So yeah! 4/10.
