A film that tackled rape culture & gave a powerful voice to victims of date rape!
From the film’s opening scene, I was hooked on the story! I want to start by saying my prayers & positive vibes are with anyone affected by rape. I also want to say that Cassie Thomas is our female lead & she is one of the most impressive characters I have ever seen depicted on film! EMPOWERING!
Cassie is a 30-year-old Medical School dropout & she works at a coffee shop. Why waste all that potential? Because every week, she pretends to be drunk & waits for “a good guy” to “make sure she’s okay”. Week after week is the same disappointment to her… they are groping, aggressively & frantically trying to remove her clothes, & finding a sick rush in her powerlessness. She fakes her slurred & discombobulated state until BOOM! She talks normal!
“Saaaaaa, staaaaaap…. staaaaaaa… HEY! I SAID STOP!”
Seeing this play out on camera was very satisfying & gave me “Dateline: To Catch A Predator” vibes. The men are now forced to confront what they were trying to do. What exactly were they trying to do? Why do they want her to leave now, all of a sudden? This dialogue is to die for & it’s meaningful! So many great questions are raised when it comes to morality & who is really to blame in these drunken party situations. They call them “Blackouts” in the film.
Cassie isn’t doing this to men for no reason, she has a notebook full of potential date rapists that she put on the spot. All of this serves a purpose that’s close to her heart & it has everything to do with why she dropped out of Medical School. I’ll let you guys watch the film & see for yourself. There is no actual rape scene, I think that’s great for victims who want an empowering film to watch without the visual triggers of films like “I Spit On Your Grave”, “The Last House On The Left”, & “M.F.A”. Trauma can still find its way to the surface, so still, watch with caution!
The film also speaks on the court system’s failure to help these situations! Important dialogue!
Amazing film!
